This project will repair and renovate an L-shaped range of semi-derelict outbuildings, which were formerly the school latrine, coal store and playground shed (later used by Denis Mitchell), to create three new artists’ studios and an accessible toilet. It is part funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
The existing structure consists of two large external masonry walls forming the L shape, with a mono-pitch roof. The roof is mostly covered with the original wet laid scantle slates with some corrugated asbestos and plastic sheets from a recent repair, but is now in a very poor condition. The latrine block included several substantial masonry partitions to form the cubicles.
The approach to the renovation will be to conserve as much of the existing fabric as possible. The roof will be re-covered with the traditional west Cornish construction using wet-laid local slates, and incorporating double glazed skylights and insulation. The masonry walls will be repointed with lime mortar where necessary, new walls will be insulated, a new insulated concrete floor slab installed and building services will be renewed throughout.
The site was cleared of vegetation and various waste materials in December 2023, allowing the contractor to start work in early January 2024.
