Caragh Thuring
Porthmeor Studio 9 (2015)
Focusing on architectural elements or landmarks, Caragh Thuring’s (b 1972) paintings begin with extensive visual research, taking inspiration from a range of source material, including her own photographs, books, travels, memories, and her knowledge of art history. This leads straight to her making large paintings on unprimed linen canvas, sometimes dying, printing or stitching the material. She uses the canvas as a space to build and collate environments, with imagery culled from multiple sources which become a social as well as geographic map. Sources are arranged in the painting absent of hierarchy in both scale and content.
