Felicity Mara

My practice involves the intuitive bringing together of diverse elements and references in order to make sense of my surroundings. My paintings are not literal descriptions, but I work with all that is around me – the landscape outside my window, the inner studio space, the changing angles of sunlight, the sounds that float up from the beach – to express a visual equivalent of these things using the materials available to me. This often involves memories and associations – a gradual unfolding rather than the imposing of an idea. Sometimes I think of the studio as a theatre space, where things can be quiet and then become animated. It is always a delicate balance.
