My practice has involved painting, drawing, installation and site-specific work. My work has often been about layers, sometimes with representational images glimpsed through passages of expressive paint-handling that emphasise the content as opposed to the subject of the painting.
Recently I have been experimenting, using my photographs as a foundation and literal support for paintings. Photographs I took on a trip around New Zealand are the starting point and I work directly on to the enlarged prints in oil paint, picking up on my responses to the images and expressing them in paint. It is a new tangent to my work but the juxtaposition of material-led elements and a kind of reality visible on a deeper layer seems to be a natural progression.
