After the completing his Doctoral Thesis in 2014, Mike Newton has been able to refocus on his studio practice and relocated to St. Ives in 2016. Incorporating the analysis and ideas from his research, his work explores various aspects of melancholia using traditional methods of oil paint on primed canvas. He uses a variety of mark making strategies to support a melancholic narrative in his paintings and to create an ‘authentic’ melancholic paintings of simple and natural motifs.
Mike Newton was born in Manchester in 1954 and recently moved to Cornwall where he works out of Porthmeor Studios in St Ives. He has a BSc (Hons) Mathematics and a BA (Hons) Fine Art. In 2006 he was awarded an MA Fine Art Painting (Distinction) and a PhD in Fine Art Painting at Bath Spa University in 2014. He has had solo shows at Jerwood Gallery Café 2006, The Brick Lane Gallery 2006, Nettie Horn, Vyner Street 2007 and been included in a number of group exhibitions between 2005 and 2017. He was awarded a regional prize in the National Open Art Competition in Chichester in 2010 and long listed for the John Moores Painting Prize in 2012.
