After the completing his Doctoral Thesis in 2014, Mike Newton has been able to refocus on his studio practice and relocated to St. Ives in 2016. Incorporating the analysis and ideas from his research, his work explores various aspects of melancholia using traditional methods of oil paint on primed canvas. He uses a variety of mark making strategies to support a melancholic narrative in his paintings and to create an ‘authentic’ melancholic paintings of simple and natural motifs.
