Fishing & Painting
This book is a field guide to The Maritime Artist, Mark Dion’s installation in Cellar 4 at Porthmeor Studios. MJ Long’s beautiful illustrations are accompanied by explanations from fisherman Chris Care and artist John Emanuel on how the various items of equipment were used.
“In 2014, the Porthmeor Studios and Cellars reopened after extensive renovation and repair. It was very important to everyone involved in the project that many of the original tenants – both fishermen and painters – stayed in the building and continued more than 100 years of shared life here. To mark the opening, Mark Dion was commissioned to create, in one of the cellars, an installation celebrating the painters and fishermen, and the equipment and material associated with what they do.
The purpose of this booklet is to record and enjoy this installation and the long history of fishing and painting in this building. Chris Care who has been setting nets in Cellar 3 for 20 years, and John Emanuel, who has been painting in Studio 2 for over 30 years, talk to M.J. Long, architect of the building work, and author of the sketches and the linking text.”
